In the heart of the island, prior to Columbus, the Mayans had thrived. Their city stretched the limits of walking distance and was jeweled with step pyramids and sacred buildings. Today, the ruins are open to visitors for exploration, either independently or with a guide. Trails winding through the jungle lead to the far reaches of the former town.
